Relocating to Houston: The First-Month Survival Guide
Moving to Houston? Start with a furnished rental for the first 30–90 days. Here's what to do in each week — and the mistakes we see over and over.
Last updated
Houston is one of the most common U.S. relocation destinations — energy, healthcare, aerospace, logistics, and a tax-friendly cost of living keep pulling people in. We help new Houstonians land every week. Here's the first-month playbook.
Week 0: before you arrive
Book a furnished rental for 30–90 days, not a hotel
Don't sign a 12-month lease from out of state. You'll regret the neighborhood you chose on a map. Instead, book a furnished Houston rental for 30–90 days while you actually live in different neighborhoods and decide. Our full argument is in corporate housing vs hotels.
Understand the geography
Houston is structured in loops: the 610 loop is the inner city, Beltway 8 is the middle ring, Grand Parkway is the outer ring. Traffic is real — a neighborhood's distance from your office matters more than most out-of-state movers expect.
Pick a neighborhood from our guide

Week 1: land soft
- Pick up the keys to your furnished rental — we make this key-less and fast.
- Buy a Texas bed sheet set (you already have them if you're with us, but new Houstonians often want their own).
- Register at your local HEB or Kroger.
- Start your commute from the rental on day one — at rush hour. That 9am "15-minute drive" may be 40 at 5pm.
Week 2: get the admin done
- Driver's license. Texas gives you 90 days to convert an out-of-state license. Book a Department of Public Safety appointment early — walk-ins are painful.
- Vehicle registration. 30 days for vehicles. You'll need a Texas inspection first.
- Voter registration. At the same DPS visit if you like.
- Utilities. Houston has a competitive power market — use the state's Power to Choose tool to pick an electricity plan before you sign a long-term lease.
Week 3: tour neighborhoods on foot
Pick two or three neighborhoods from the guide and spend an evening in each. Walk the streets at 8pm. Go to the grocery store. Drive the commute. You'll know within 20 minutes whether it's you.
Week 4: sign the 12-month lease (or not)
By the end of week four, you'll have conviction on the right neighborhood. Now sign. Or — and this is common — extend the furnished rental another 60 days while you find the right permanent home. We build that flexibility into every contract.
Things nobody tells you about Houston
- Air conditioning is a year-round expense. Expect summer electric bills of $200–$400 in a single-family home.
- Flood zones matter. Before buying anything, check the FEMA flood map and ask about Harvey-era flooding history.
- Toll roads are everywhere. Get an EZ Tag early.
- It's big. Commute decisions dominate quality of life.
FAQ
How long should I stay in a furnished rental when relocating to Houston?
Most relocating guests stay 30–90 days while they pick a neighborhood and find a permanent home. Some families stay 6–12 months, especially if they're building or waiting for a school-year transition.
Can my relocation company or employer pay for the rental directly?
Yes. We bill relocation providers and companies directly — just contact us with the billing details.
Do furnished rentals accept pets?
Many do. Filter our rentals page for pet-friendly or read our pet-friendly rentals guide.
Which Houston neighborhoods are best for families relocating?
The Heights, Memorial, West U, and parts of Bellaire are popular with relocating families. Our Casa Luna, a 4-bedroom Bellaire home, is a classic family starting point.
Should I ship my car or buy one in Houston?
If you're arriving for a 1–3 month stay, keep your current car and drive it. For longer stays, Houston is a great city to buy a used car — large inventory, no state income tax, low title costs.
