Downtown Houston Extended Stay: Where to Live Near Discovery Green
Staying in Downtown Houston for a month or more? Here's the insider map of buildings, streets, and blocks worth your rent check.
Last updated
Downtown Houston has transformed in the last decade — Discovery Green, the Green Loop, new high-rises, and a legitimate restaurant scene. For extended stays, it's a completely different city than it was fifteen years ago.
Here's how we think about it when placing guests into Houston extended stay rentals.
Why stay Downtown
- Offices are right there. If you work for a law firm, an energy trading desk, or a bank with a Downtown address, you can walk.
- Tunnels. Houston's Downtown tunnel system connects most major buildings underground — walk to lunch without stepping outside in July.
- Sports and shows. Minute Maid Park (Astros), Toyota Center (Rockets), the Theater District, and Discovery Green within a few blocks.
- Weekend quiet. Yes, really. Downtown empties out on weekends, which is a feature for some stays.
Submarkets within Downtown
The CBD (Central Business District)
The tower-and-tunnels core. Closest to offices, some residential high-rises mixed in.
Theater District
Northwest corner. Walkable to the Wortham Center, Jones Hall, Alley Theater. Residential tone at night.
Market Square / Historic District
Old buildings, loft conversions, best restaurants Downtown, nightlife. Younger feel.
Midtown (just south of Downtown)
Technically its own neighborhood, but frequently grouped with Downtown for corporate travelers. Cheaper per night, bars and restaurants, an easy METRORail ride into Downtown proper.
EaDo (East Downtown)
Just east. Warehouse conversions, galleries, BBVA Stadium. Excellent value.
A typical Downtown furnished rental
Expect a high-rise 1-bedroom or studio loft, often with skyline views, a rooftop pool, and gym access. We don't currently have Downtown inventory; our nearest smaller-footprint option is our Montrose Retreat — a 1-bedroom apartment in Montrose, a 10-minute drive from Downtown.
What to expect on utility bills and parking
- Parking. Downtown garages are $180–$300/month. Most high-rise rentals bundle at least one space — confirm before booking.
- Utilities. Typically included in a monthly corporate-housing rate. In Texas you can pick your electricity provider if you're paying direct.
- Groceries. The Phoenicia Market and the new HEB in EaDo cover everything Downtown needs.

FAQ
Is Downtown Houston safe for a long stay?
Downtown is generally safe during business hours and residential-building blocks. As in any big-city downtown, the blocks change character block-by-block at night; any of the high-rise residential buildings we work with are safe walks to and from.
Do I need a car if I'm staying Downtown?
For stays of 1–3 weeks, no. For longer stays, most guests still keep a car — Houston is hard to fully live without one.
Can I walk to Minute Maid Park from a furnished rental Downtown?
Yes, from most Downtown and EaDo rentals, Minute Maid Park is a 5–15 minute walk.
Are Downtown rentals pet-friendly?
Most of the high-rise buildings we work with accept pets with a deposit — confirm per property. More in our pet-friendly Houston rentals guide.
How much does Downtown Houston corporate housing cost?
For a 1-bedroom high-rise loft at 30+ nights, expect $165–$220/night in most seasons; 2-bedroom units run $240–$310/night.
